deathless (chapter ten)
Caleb arrived at the venue almost an hour late. He had a hard time of convincing Fiona and Leonard to accompany him. All the success he had came from Leonard. Better to have him than have no one. Because he was late, he wasn’t able to see Laverne in her grand entrance. He was already in the party for two hours but still, he hadn’t seen even the shadow of the celebrant. Is this how hard she is to get? He didn’t intend to stay until the end of the party. He knew that somehow there would be people who would recognize him, and he doesn’t want to answer any questions concerning the issues about his family. All he needs to do is to find Mr. and Mrs. Beaufort and apologize, on behalf of his mother, why she couldn’t come. Then, he would go and talk to Laverne, if he ever finds her. Am I in love with her? No, that’s impossible. He doesn’t believe in love at first sight. Besides, he was just challenged. Never has there been a girl who had treated him like she did the time they met at the park. I’ll just make sure that I’ll have her wrapped around my finger. After that, done. The feeling would be satisfactory. Imagine, I made the youngest daughter of the mysterious Beaufort family cry.
Yet, his way to the success of his plan wasn’t easy. As he expected, there are people who recognized him. In fact, there were a lot of them and they were all bombarding him with questions about his family. This made it hard for him to approach the Beaufort couple when he saw them pass by. It also made it harder for him to look for Laverne. As the party continues on, his hope of seeing her and talking to her started to fail. At the same time, he couldn’t stand the busybodies who don’t seem to stop asking him questions. Soon, he decided to leave.
But where is Leonard? Caleb proceeded to a part of the garden which was beyond the party premises. He never thought the Beaufort’s has a garden this big, and he literally mean big. As he was walking on, he noticed a movement in the corner of his eyes. When he looked to his left, he saw a woman with her back at him, looking up at the night sky.
For the last time this evening, Laverne changed her gown. This time it was a black and white gown with a big flowing skirt. This only means that the party is about to end. Finally. Right now, all she wanted to do is to lock herself up in her room. She already had too much. She felt like she’s suffocating whenever she’s in the middle of the crowd. Some way or another, she was able to sneak out away from her parents for a couple of minutes to have a breather. But since that Mitchell was introduced to her, he had been accompanying her wherever she went. He wasn’t that bad actually. He’s such a gentleman and he knows how to start a conversation, by which she soon found out that he’s pretty smart. However, that is not what she needs right now. She tried to be friendly and accommodating to him, yet she’s not in the mood for fancy conversations, learning that this guy has interest on her. No need to bother whether it was sincere or it’s all because of their families. Whatever. She won’t be thinking about it for now.
After she had dressed, she told Deborah that she would just go out for a while to take a deep breath. She never mentioned where exactly she would go for she, herself, doesn’t know. She first decided to stay in the library for a while but as she was heading there, she happened to look out the window and saw, for the first time that night, that the moon was full and the sky is flooded with stars. Though she’s a few more steps away from the library, she suddenly changed her mind.
Now, she’s out in the non-party premise of the garden where a beautiful gazebo, her favorite among all others, was located. She just stood there, letting the moon envelope her with its dim light. She was looking up at the stars, admiring their sparkling beauty, when…
“Excuse me,” it was a man’s voice. Laverne first thought that Mitchell had found her and is now invading her private moment. The thought irritated her but she tried to calm herself, manage to put a smile on her face, before facing him.
“Hi,” she had already blurted out before she realized that she was wrong. No Mitchell is standing in front of her. It was Caleb.
Caleb, on the other hand, was stupefied. Seeing Laverne, all dressed up like a princess, standing under the gazebo with the moonlight serving as the only thing that illuminated her, he almost forgot to breathe. She was such a spectacle and right at that moment, Caleb wanted to believe that there is such a thing as love at first sight. But this isn’t my first sight of her. He suddenly forgot his plan of wrapping her around his finger and instead, he wanted to wrap her in his arms. And whisper to her that I love her.
“What are you doing here?” Laverne was trying to control her surprise. Now, he knows who I am. I never thought that my little game with him would end this soon.
“Uhmm…” Caleb was trying so hard to speak straight and calmly. “My mom received an invitation but she couldn’t come because she has a lot to do in New York. So, she sent me-”
“Wait. You got me wrong. You have the right to be in this party. You’re a member of Portugal’s royal family. But that doesn’t mean you can come into this place. This is beyond party premises. This place is private and guests are not allowed in here. So, what are you doing here?”
“I was looking for my cousin and I happened to wander into this place,” And found an angel instead.
“Well, you will never find your cousin here. If you want, young princey, describe your cousin to me and I will tell the security to look for him. If you’re going to look for him alone, you might as well look for a grain of rice in a bucket of sand.”
“No need. I would just call him in his cell phone. Thank you.”
“Suit yourself.”
“Anyway, since I’m already here, I would like to greet you a happy birthday, Miss Laverne Gwendolyn Daniels Beaufort. I wish that you would have more birthdays to come.”
I’ll assure you right at this moment, that even before you had wished me more birthdays, it has already come to pass. “So, it seems you already know who I am. I bet you hadn’t had a hard time looking me up.”
“As a matter of fact, yes, I didn’t. Taken into consideration that today is your birthday, my cousin knows your whole name and the Internet is just a click away. But I hope you wouldn’t mind if I ask you, what is the birthday celebrant doing here? This is your party. Shouldn’t you be out there and enjoying it?”
“Who told you that I’m enjoying this party? I would rather choose to be in Thailand or Brazil right now and celebrating alone.”
“Oh… I’m sorry. I always thought that girls love to have parties like this.”
“Well, you should understand that not all girls are the same.”
I understood that since I met an extraordinary girl like you.
“Still, you should be thankful of what you have. There are a lot of people out there wishing that they are in your shoes.”
“People should be careful of what they wish for, because they might get more than what they have bargained. I should get going. They might already be looking for me. Good luck in your search for your cousin. And, if I were you, I’ll get out of this garden before the security sees you.” As Laverne was walking away, she looked back to Caleb and said, “Thank you for coming.” Not only to my party, but also to my life.
